The Doorway Gallery is delighted to host an exhibition by Aileen Johnson titled “The Home Place” On Thursday, October 4th between 6-7.30pm on 24 South Frederick Street.

Aileen Johnston is a textile artist specialising in embroidery. This collection of new work from Aileen entitled “The Home Place “is inspired by her home on a farm in Wicklow, and the themes she explores are the natural world and the rhythm of the seasons. Using hand embroidery, hand beading and the technique of free machine embroidery and influenced by her love of mediaeval Books of Hours and illuminated manuscripts with their intricate borders and jewel-like colours, she has created pieces that shimmer with detail and intricacy .Her work is held in private and public collections both here and abroad.

This is Aileen’s first solo show in twelve years so The Doorway Gallery is thrilled to host this wonderful exhibition.

“Aileen Johnston’s embroidered images are remarkable .Technically brilliant, she has her own distinctive offbeat visual style, and her work is singular and engaging.”

Aidan Dunne,The Irish Times.

“Aileen’s work captures people, places and creatures in vibrant and shimmering thread. Johnston achieves a magical quality in each intricate and unique piece, exploiting the natural undulations of cloth and the luminescence of the fibres to gain depth and light.”
