ABOUT HELEN ACKLAM

Helen Acklam is an artist living and working in south-west Scotland. Inspired by the Scottish highlands & islands the main subjects of her work are the cottages and bothies of the Outer Hebrides and Shetland. Many of these structures that lie abandoned and derelict
were once home to generations of islanders. Her work celebrates the beauty of these historic constructions. Her mixed media work is developed using a blend of relevant materials and textures that bring a sense of place and adds authenticity to the work. This Shetland collection uses sand from local beaches, corrugated cardboard, pages from an old novel found in a Shetland cottage and vintage wallpaper salvaged from an abandoned croft cottage. The combination of these materials enables Helen to breathe new life into these often forgotten places.

"I’m a mixed media artist who explores surface, form, texture and colour in my work. Paintings are informed by architecture, landscape, history and myth. Sculptural forms, boxworks and books are made from found materials, plaster and textiles.

Originally from Yorkshire I now live in South West Scotland. After a long career in the NHS I graduated from the University of Cumbria with FDA Drawing in 2012. Work is exhibited in UK galleries, an Irish gallery and is held in private collections across the world." Helen Acklam
