Con Brio

An exhibition of new paintings by Francis Boag

October 3rd – 24th

The Doorway Gallery, 24 South Frederick St, Dublin 2.

The Doorway Gallery is delighted to host an exhibition by Francis Boag, entitled, Con Brio, on Thursday October 3rd 6 - 7.30 pm, at 24 South Frederick Street. Irish television and radio presenter, Mairead Ronan will officially open Francis Boag’s solo show.

Francis Boag enrolled at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, just three days after his 17th birthday in 1965.  At the age of 20, Francis had become one of their youngest ever graduates, when he completed the course in June 1969.

Frank taught art in schools across Scotland before arriving at Aberdeen Grammar School as Head of Art in 1989 a role he enjoyed for more than 10 years.

Francis Boag’s unique point of view is formed from colours, shapes and rhythmic marks that brings life to

his images. The memories he extracts from his work includes objects such as champagne, flowers, ribbons and wrapped birthday presents.  Hints of them can be observed throughout his works. The pleasure in Boag’s work is integral to its success. There is a joy to his painting that radiates from the canvas, and becomes an ensemble of happy memories for every individual who sees it.

His interpretations of the world he sees around him, be it from the view of his studio window, or perhaps a grand palazzo in Venice, are all imbued with an optimism and harmony. His colours grow and sing in carefully constructed designs, and the uplifting quality to his work can turn the white cube of the gallery space into an optimistic and glowing art space that flourishes.

It is these unique factors that have led to both a combination of critical acclaim and commercial success. These bright, buoyant and resplendent images, crafted through mark making, colour manipulation and careful placement of significant visual markers, lead to a view of the art object as a point of the celebration, joy and hope that can be found in the everyday.
