  • The trip to tory island had strong associations for me as I had stayed there around 20 years previously and had quite an experience. A friend of mine, the artist Ian Fleming was bringing me as he had a long arelationship with the island and its artists.

Tory is famed for being the place that Derek Hill did a large amount of his work and he is an artist I have long admired. One evening we went out to his hut that he had worked from, an old telegram signal station perched right above the Atlantic, miles away from the village. We were able to get the keys to the hut and I tried a few paintings inside sitting at his very desk but unfortunately they just didn't work out. As I was waiting for Ian to finish his work he said why not do a painting of the beam from the nearby lighthouse as it spread across the island. It was so dark that the beams could be traced right across the whole island lighting it up for miles. It was one of those paintings that just came together in perfect harmony almost effortlessly in stark contrast to the unsuccessful ones I had laboured over earlier.
