This is the largest painting in the exhibition and with good reason. I've visited many of the cliff masses on the west coast which in themselves are amongst the most impressive in Europe but nothing could prepare me for the cliffs of Tory Island. I think the fact that they sit within an island environment that is contained and relatively small makes them appear all the more overpowering. I literally felt nauseous most of the time exploring the Island knowing that 'help' was very far away. This particular stack which had cleaved itself off from the main mass of cliffs just sat perfectly in front of the stage set of the Donegal coastline and everything about it including the precarious climb down and the deep black-blue of the sea conspired to give that sense of majesty - hence the large canvas size.
