  • I found Inishbarra on a map while simply trawling google earth looking for places that looked interesting. I was looking for somewhere with a past that was now totally forgotten about. Inishbarra was a little bit inaccessible and just tucked out of view off Lettermore in Connemara so I found a suitable time and weather window and set off in the kayak. I thought I was totally alone until I heard the soft 'put-put' of a curragh with an outboard motor attached. The noise got louder and I realised that the person was headed straight out to the Island. Nervously I waited for him to land and while initially he was a little suspicious once he understood that I wasn't there to steal his harvested seaweed he relaxed and we had a good conversation about the island and his grandfathers houses that stood on the Island.
Inishbarra was totally overgrown and getting to most of it proved very difficult despite it once once having had roads and a school. This glimpse of one of the ruined houses was painted on location and I particularly liked the tree that stood next to the house tortured into a windswept shape by the relentless winds that characterise places like this for much of the year.
It was on Inishbarra that I first became aware that here are places that were once taken over by human activity but now that process is slowly being reversed. After this point I stopped trying to struggle through such environments but to appreciate that here was nature denying me access and to accept it for what it was and take what I could from it in terms of painting subjects.
