When painting 'en plein air' I'm always looking for something unique to each place, an aspect I've never seen before that I can visually explore through the means that I know so well. So it was with a walk around Bull Island near Dublin, technically not an island I believe but an overgrown sand bar which has gradually developed over the past 4 centuries due to the movement of sand and sea current against the man- made sea wall. It was a long walk around the island on a hot summers day and on the return journey this view seemed to say something about its relationship to the city of Dublin, forever linked but also a place apart. I tried to give some sense of the hot overcast hazy atmosphere by using a really limited palette of just a few colours.
