  • I had been planning a crannog painting for some time. Each one I attempted seemed to fall flat ending up as simply a small sliver streaked across a canvas. Even landing on one didn't do anything as I simply couldn't find a way to grasp a sense of the experience or express it visually.

I gave up on the idea for a long time until my wife and I spent an anniversary weekend at Lough Rynn Castle in Leitrim.

Walking through the grounds at night there was a terrific bang and a flock of ducks that were nesting nearby flew off startled. A couple at the hotel had just got married and were having a fireworks display over the lawn. We lay down on the grass and watched the spectacular light show of both the fireworks and the stars on that perfectly clear moonlit night.

This painting was done completely from memory after getting back to the hotel room, The experience crystalised in the imagination and the memory.
