Nancy is is largely self taught, and paints still life in a pared back style with contemporary elegance.

She became a full time artist in 2020, after a 30 year career in the charity sector.

Nancy began exhibiting in 2019 and since then has exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in London, RWA in Bristol, Affordable Art Fairs in Battersea and Hampstead (London), Fresh Art Fair, Manchester Art Fair and Edinburgh Art Fair. She shows her paintings in galleries throughout the UK and sells work internationally.

Doorway Gallery is the first to represent her work outside the UK.

Nancy aims to capture an essence rather than a literal interpretation of each subject. She enjoys exploring new methods of mark making. To paint a dandelion, for instance, she might use needles to capture their distinctive petals whereas poppies require a technique using ‘palette knives’ made from recycled plastic.

Artist Statement

Nancy Chambers is a British artist creating still-life paintings with a pared-back style and

contemporary elegance.

Nancy describes her painting style as ‘creating calm from the chaos of paint’.

‘I enjoy not just the colour but the textural quality of paint and I work with both to achieve the

finished painting. With a dandelion, for instance, I paint with needles to capture their distinctive

petals and for my pears I paint in many thin glazes to achieve depth as well as detail.

She says ‘My inspiration comes from capturing fleeting moments in nature. I'm captivated by

the pied beauty of a pear, the sheen of a pomegranate and the bloom on a plum. Spending time

with nature, in my garden or walking, fuels my creativity and continually inspires my art. In the

studio I will distil each subject to its purest form, with the aim of making work which is elegant

and uncluttered.’

‘I draw inspiration from the still life paintings of Dutch masters but I think you can draw a line

from my work back to mid-century British artists including Barbara Hepworth and Mary Feddon

who mastered how to capture simplicity and purity in their artworks.’

Artist Biography

Showing early promise, Nancy was encouraged to take art exams early so she could focus on

academic subjects. With hindsight, she believes this to be poor advice – pushing her down an

academic path which took her away from her first love of painting. A career in charities followed but

Nancy continued to paint and hone her skills, attending courses in Bristol and St Ives.

In June 2019, she exhibited her work for the first time at an open studios event in Bristol. Her work

quickly gathered a following and she began exhibiting in galleries in the Cotswolds, Hampshire,

Cambridgeshire and Scotland the same year.

With the global pandemic of 2020 and thanks in part to the Artist Support Pledge her work gained an

international following and she began shipping work to the USA, the Middle East and Australia.

In 2021 she had work selected by judges for prestigious public exhibitions (the Royal West of

England Academy of Art, Broadway Arts Festival, Bath Society of Artists) and in 2024 had work

included in the Royal Society of British Artists Bicentennial Open Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in

London. Nancy exhibits widely across the UK at art fairs and is represented by 12 UK galleries.
